Why does your scalp itch?
Itching, flaking, hair that gets greasy fast. Your scalp is skin too; here is how to care for it.
the scalp is skin too
Your scalp is skin
The skin under your hair is protected by a barrier, just like the skin on your face. When this barrier is worn down, itching, stinging and sensitivity increase. Research shows that between a third and a half of people complain of a sensitive scalp, and that it is more common in women.
What is dandruff?
Dandruff is the shedding of small, dry flakes from the scalp. An oily scalp, hair care habits or certain skin conditions can lead to it. Mild dandruff often eases with regular washing.
How often should you wash?
There is a belief that "if you wash often, your roots get greasier." In a large study published in 2021, people who washed 5-6 times a week were the most satisfied with the state of their hair and scalp; in the controlled part, daily washing did better than washing once a week on every measure, and no harm to the hair was seen.
What helps
- 1If your scalp is oily, wash often; for fine, straight hair it can be every day.
- 2Apply shampoo to your scalp, not the ends, and massage with your fingertips.
- 3Don't scratch with your nails; it irritates the scalp.
- 4Don't use very hot water, and rinse thoroughly.
If dandruff doesn't clear in a few weeks, or there is redness and thick scales, see a dermatologist.
