When and how should you apply moisturizer?
The best moment is right after a shower or washing your face. How much should you use, and morning or evening?
on damp skin
Why damp skin?
A moisturizer forms a thin layer on your skin and slows the evaporation of the water underneath. If you apply it once your skin has dried, there is less water left to hold in. That's why dermatologists recommend applying cream right after showering or washing your hands, while the skin is still damp.
Ten minutes
In studies measuring moisture after bathing, the water in the skin drops back to its starting level within ten minutes of stepping out of the shower. Pat dry with a towel, then apply your cream.
How much?
A pea-sized amount is enough for the face and neck. Don't pull at the skin around your eyes; that is the thinnest skin on your face.
Morning or evening?
- 1Morning: after washing your face, before sunscreen.
- 2Evening: after washing your face, before bed.
- 3During the day, whenever your skin feels tight or after washing your hands.
In clinical studies, regular moisturizing reduces the appearance of fine lines. It's not a one-off; what you do every day is what shows.
