Why does winter dry you out?
Skin loses more water as the humidity in the air drops. Outside, cold and wind; inside, heating or air conditioning dry the air. In a study on winter indoor conditions, participants who spent 6 hours in a room with the heater on showed a clear increase in water loss from the skin of their arm.
In the shower
- 1Finish your shower in 5-10 minutes and keep the water lukewarm.
- 2Pat dry with a towel.
- 3Apply your cream right after the shower, while your skin is damp.
At home and outdoors
- 1In winter, choose a richer cream instead of a lotion.
- 2You can use a humidifier in the bedroom; don't turn the heating up too high.
- 3When you go out, protect your face and hands from the cold, and use lip balm.
- 4Don't give up sunscreen in winter either.
