Why does the skin under your beard itch?

The skin under your beard needs care too. Dermatologist tips to reduce itching, dryness and flaking.

a beard needs skin care

Why does it itch?

Dirt, oil and dead skin build up under a beard. As the skin dries, it itches and flakes. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, with the right care most beard dandruff, itching and ingrown hairs can be prevented.

Washing

Wash your face and beard every day. Instead of soap, use a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type; it removes dirt without drying the skin and keeps dryness under the beard at bay.

Moisturizing

A bearded face needs moisture too. When the skin gets very dry, the oil glands work harder, which can lead to breakouts. A gentle moisturizer works for sensitive skin, beard oil for dry skin.

A short routine

  • 1Wash your face and beard morning and evening.
  • 2Pat dry with a towel.
  • 3Work the moisturizer in with your fingertips, all the way to the skin under your beard.
  • 4If itching, redness or breakouts don't go away, see a dermatologist.
