How to use a clay mask
How many times a week, how many minutes, should it dry completely? What you need to know to get the most from a clay mask.
before it fully dries
What does clay do?
Clays such as kaolin and bentonite draw oil to themselves. In a study of 75 adults, people with oily and combination skin who used a clay mask twice a week saw a clear drop in the amount of oil on the surface.
One thing is worth knowing: the effect is temporary. In another study, oil rose again a few hours after the mask. So a clay mask is part of a regular routine, not a one-time miracle.
Step by step
- 1Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat dry with a towel.
- 2Apply a thin layer of the mask, avoiding the eye and lip area.
- 3Wait 10-15 minutes. Don't wait for it to dry completely and crack; that dries the skin too much.
- 4Rinse with lukewarm water, without scrubbing.
- 5Apply your moisturizer while the skin is still damp.
How often?
Twice a week for oily skin, once a week for combination skin. If your skin is dry, you can apply it only to the T-zone.
